Recently, a news item was reported in Indian newspaper where a girl cycled 1200 km from Haryana and reached her village in Bihar; also carrying her injured father. Immediately, US President Donald Trump' daughter and senior White House adviser Ivanka Trump praised the girl in a social media post. Thereafter, Cycling Federation of India (CFI) has offered her a trial. [News]
What Jyoti did is definitely praiseworthy. But why do newspapers pickup incidents of courage and strength only from one gender and make it a gender issue every time?
Ever since Lockdown started, millions of migrants are traveling very long distances on foot. Newspapers are filled with hundreds of cases where a man would carry his entire family riding rickshaw cart and travel thousands of kilometers. But such news were not given any limelight like Jyoti's news has been given. In one case a man carried his old mother over his back and walked his way home! In another, a handicapped man traveled 700 kms and reached his village to help his sister who was facing some health issues.
Hundreds of men have shown greater courage than Jyoti Kumari but never got similar kind of attention, praise or support from authorities. This just shows how our society and media are gender biased in favor of women.
